Farion's Tale Chapter One

Farion's Tale Chapter One

On a cool crisp morning, three adventurers answer the call of the fliers posted around Raven’s Bluff and arrive at the docks ready to sail for Morriganland. Dugan Rex Brewmeister, a dwarf, is the oldest and wisest of the group. A cleric of the war domain, Dugan carries his warhammer and is always ready to defend those in need; the only thing he’s more passionate about than helping the weak is sharing his speciality brew. Alongside Dugan is his cousin, Frostbeard Hammerstone. Though related by blood the gifts of wisdom and intelligence were not equally shared in the family tree, but what Frosty lacks in brains, he makes up for in raw strength. On the battlefield, no warrior can match this barbarian’s accomplishments. His flail and javelin are known by all his enemies, or at least those still alive to tell the stories. The third and youngest member of the party, Farion Malister stands out in the group for his height. Elves are not often seen traveling with dwarves but this merry group have found commonality in their quest for adventure and hunt for answers in life. Farion is more likely to talk his way out of trouble rather than use any sharp-edged weapon, and when this approach fails a violent Ray of Frost silences his foes. These travelers believe they have found the perfect adventure with a voyage to Morriganland.

Arriving at the port and surrounded by unprepared and desperate adventurers, the party is immediately singled out for the trip. The group makes their way upon the ship and they set sail. Sleeping amongst the crew in hammocks, the adventurers are enlisted into daily chores as a way to make currency local to Morriganland. Dugan works in the kitchen, cleaning dishes with minimal success. Frosty works the Mess Hall. Farion works in navigation, cleaning the equipment. Eventually they reach land across the sea and the travelers depart at a local port of a small village. After a less than informative conversation with a local, a cart pulls up to make a delivery and the driver calls out to the travelers telling them that he’s been hired to bring them back to Kindleview. He introduces himself as Simon and says that he knows little except that he was paid to pick up these adventurers.

The party gets into the cart to travel off to Kindleview, and along the way the see off in the distance a fallen tree with two figures standing beside it. Upon approaching, these strangers demand a toll of the travelers. The bandits point to a comrade in the woods with a crossbow who stands beside a group of shadowed figures as an incentive for the travelers to pay the toll. While Dugan attempts to come to an agreement with the bandits, Farion begins to a Charm Spell. This action is seen by the bandits; they immediately become hostile and a battle ensues. Frostbeard fells one bandit with his flail. A magic missile finished off the crossbow armed bandit in the woods. Seeing his friends dead, the third bandit tries to make a run for it but is fallen by Frosty’s javelin. Simon thanks them for defending him and his cart. He makes mention of an absent king and kings-guard who have been off battling some unknown force for quite some time. As he finishes speaking, they arrive at Kindleview.

Simon drops off the travelers at Harvest Inn and tells them to go inside. Upon entering, the party sees a short, blonde-haired human woman who introduces herself as Beatrice, or “Bee”. She had received a carrier pigeon with a note and gold requesting her to send someone to pick up three adventurers from the port. The individual who sent the note was Deimos, Scholar of the Red Flag. It would be a few days before Deimos would be able to come meet them and in the meantime there was a local disturbance that the adventurers might be able to help resolve. Some sort of creature had been taking the sheep from a local farm owned by Clara Dinkle, and just recently Clara’s son was stolen from the farm. The local guards were of no use since the standard guards were off at battle, the replacement guards were mere children.

The adventurers headed out to the Dinkle Farm to investigate. Farion cast his Find Familiar spell and conjured his familiar into the form of a hawk, Gawain. The now-party of four arrived at the farm. Connecting to Gawain, Farion searched the farm from the air to make sure it was safe to approach. The three travelers approached the door as Clara opened it slightly to ask their business. They inquired as to the recent mysterious activity and the disappearance of her

son, Arnold. At night, a humanoid covered in hair would exit the woods and steal sheep from her farm. During this conversation, they learn about that Clara’s husband, Roger, had also disappeared weeks ago. They promise to search for answers and let her know what they find.

Returning to the inn, the party rests for the night. In the morning they are served a hearty breakfast by their host, Bee. Down the bar from where they sit they see a sleeping gnome who Bee introduces as Gurbo. They wake Gurbo from his drunken doze and ask for his knowledge of the woods. He speaks of a passion for mushrooms and offers to guide the travelers in the woods in search of mushrooms. He warns them off going into the woods by themselves as there are goblins, wolves and jackals on the loose. With Gurbo, they head off into the woods to find delicious mushrooms and possibly do some scouting. During their foresting, they discover a trap rigged to capture unsuspecting wanderers. The adventurers send Gurbo back to the village and they investigate further.

Farion disarms the trap and they begin to search for any signs of life in the area. They hear in the distance the noise of creatures fighting. Creeping into range, Farion, Dugan and Frosty see two goblins fighting over a meal. Farion casts a Charm spell onto one goblin and approaches his new friend. The un-charmed goblin is confused at his friend’s attitude towards this tall elf but he holds his position while the charmed goblin speaks. They talk of the local activities including a cave that holds a mysterious creature as well as the goblin campsite, containing thirty goblins. The five part amicably in an interaction that became the talk of the goblin campsite upon their return.

The three adventurers make their way to the unknown cave. They stumble upon an unknown mushroom, which Farion goes to investigate only to pass out briefly from the smell. They reach an open field and see a large, half-ogre on the edge of the field. He’s eating a deer and holds a bag in his possession. The travelers choose to leave the half-ogre in peace and walk on the other side of the field. They enter the cave and come upon a chamber with three jackals and wolf. They fight the animals and find at the back of the cave two paths. They climb up a small ledge and quietly make their way down a narrow path. They come upon a sliver of an opening that gives them visual on the back of the cave. They see Arnold surrounding by the sleeping mushrooms, a single jackal, and an unknown monster. Farion casts Message to whisper a message to the creature. The startled creature yells out “Who’s there?” and begins to search the chamber. He steps into the light and the adventures see a Were-jackal. At this moment the creature sees Farion in the opening. While the creature and the wizard talk, Dugan and Frosty loop back around in the cave and make their way to the main entrance of the final chamber. They hold position waiting for a sign to attack if necessary.

Farion discovered that the Were-jackal was Roger Dinkle, whom a witch had cursed after stumbling upon his in the woods. Farion and Roger talk of the family Roger had to leave behind and the reason that Roger had stolen Arnold. Roger agrees to let the adventurers return his son to his mother and to leave the people and farms of Kindleview alone.

Victorious, the adventurers return to Clara Dinkle’s farm with her son. They tell her of her husband’s circumstances and she gives them a Bag of Holding and the guards give them 150 gp. After two days in celebration of the rescue of Arnold Dinkle, Deimos arrives and the adventurers are ready for the next chapter.
